Sneaking in
It all started with a thunderstorm. It was thundering, and there was lightning and my daughter was scared in her room, so I let her crawl into bed with me. A few days later, there was another storm, and she did the same thing. Next thing I know she is trying to sneak in every night- "Mommy, do you hear thunder? I think I hear thunder..."
I have never been a fan of letting my kid sleep in my bed. Even when she was a baby, I always put my daughter down in her own bed at nap time and bed time. As a single mom, it is important to me to have my own space after a long day oftrying not to kill taking care of my kid. Now, she wants to sleep in my bed every night, and I am drawing the line! There is a lot of research out there about the wonders of having a "family bed", but I am definitely trying not to have one in my house!

I made a "nest" on my floor for my girls when they were at the age they wanted to get in my bed all the time. There were pillows and blankets on the floor next to my bed, and the girls knew they could climb in there when they wanted. They were not allowed to wake me up, though, and they had to go back to their own room when it got light outside and my husband and I started to get ready for the day. Our "nest" idea also came after a patch of thunderstorms, and I just couldn't handle two toddlers in my already crowded full sized bed. The nest worked wonders; I got all the sleep I needed, the girls got the comfort they desired, and we all woke up without being grumpy. The nest stayed on the floor for a couple of months, but after a couple weeks it was rarely used. When I was ready I quietly put the pillows and blankets away, and all was normal again.
That's a great idea, Karen, I just might have to try that!
Let me know how it goes. I'd be interested to hear if my girls were unique or if I'm on to something!
