Kids and Nature

Teaching my students all about nature!

Many kids today don't get to go out into nature much.  It is too bad, because when I was growing up, I remember running around outside from after breakfast till the streetlights came on!  We caught crayfish and minnows from ponds, went exploring in the woods, tried to catch birds, picked berries, built tree houses and had great times in the outdoors.  These days we have to take our kids on field trips to get these types of experiences.  In our area we take a field trip out to the woods where our kids get to ride in a boat, catch critters from a river, hold snakes, turtles, gators and chicks, learn to use a compass, build a shelter and run around in the woods.  Many of my students have never done anything like this in their life!  They ask a million questions, take two million pictures with their cell phones and have the time of their middle school lives!  What are you doing to introduce your kids to nature?

Can you describe your life in just 6 words???

There are lots of things our kids miss out on that we enjoyed in our more carefree, danger-free, non-electronic childhood. Great that you're introducing kids to things they might not otherwise experience.

I feel so blessed to have grown up close to nature!

I love that you're taking the kids to do fun stuff and see cool critters! I think that Tami's right when she brought up the technology aspect of kid's lives now. It's a bummer that so many spend so much time in front of a screen and not much time outside. We're blessed to live on 3 acres of pine tree forrest and we give our 4 kids The BOOT outside as often as we can. They're running around with the dog, watching birds, finding rabbit holes, building forts... still doing the things we did as kids. It's sad to me to think that my kids are the exception to the rule these days! We try to invite little buddies over as often as we can to do the same thing!

Thanks so much for linking up for #SundayFunday!!

I'm jealous of your three acres, Sarah! I have a condo with a small square of grass, but we have a garden planted. I also take my daughter to my mom, who has an acre, as much as I can so she can have some more room to run around!

Shivering at the snake pictures! I think I'll leave those to the kids! ;-)
